LOSING SLEEP AND LOSING STEAM: Greg Abbott Burns through Massive War Chest with Little to Show for It

DALLAS, TX – With less than a month to go until Election Day, things aren’t going according to plan for career politician Greg Abbott.

Abbott entered the 2026 cycle sitting on a massive war chest of $106 million. Now, according to his latest campaign finance report, he’s down to just $17 million cash on hand after burning through more than $140 million on his toughest re-election fight ever.

And after nearly one year since announcing his re-election campaign, all that money isn’t moving the needle.

Abbott trails Gina Hinojosa in recent polling, while some fellow Republicans are publicly warning he could lose in November.

That helps explain why Abbott is too scared to get on the debate stage. And as Donald Trump comes to San Antonio tomorrow, Abbott is notably staying away – another sign he’s trying to put distance between himself and an unpopular president.

But perhaps the strongest indication that Abbott is panicking is the fact that he told donors this week “he’s having trouble sleeping at night” over the state of the race as billionaires and big corporations pour in millions at the last second to try and save him.

“This is not the year Greg Abbott thought he’d be having, but it’s the year Greg Abbott deserves. He started this race with every advantage, and even after spending more than $140 million, it’s still keeping him up at night because none of it’s working. Texans are ready for change. They know that four more years of Greg Abbott means more data centers, fewer public schools, and higher property taxes. So he can duck debates, flood the airwaves, and turn his back on Trump all he wants, but no amount of money can change his record of selling out Texas to his billionaire donors,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
