Texas Voters Choose a New Direction

DALLAS, TX —  Tonight, Texas voters made their voices heard.  With 70% of the votes counted, James Talarico has been elected United States Senator, and Gina Hinojosa has been elected Governor of Texas. Democrats are also on track to secure a majority in the State House.

These results mark a significant moment for Texas. After years of increasingly divisive political rhetoric, Texas voters have chosen a different direction, one focused on the issues that affect their everyday lives and on finding solutions to the challenges facing families and communities across our state.

We are especially proud to see South Texas turn blue again. From the Rio Grande Valley to communities across the region, voters showed that South Texas remains an essential part of the Democratic coalition and an important voice in the future of Texas.  Democrats are proud to have earned the trust of voters by showing up in their neighborhoods, workplaces and schools, listening to their concerns and engaging in conversations about the future of their families and communities.

Texans turned out in strong numbers during the early voting period, with more than 7.75 million ballots cast, a 41% increase over 2022 and nearly 31% more than in 2018, reflecting the scope of the work carried out at the state level. These figures underscore the importance of investing in the mobilization of volunteers and voters, and in building lasting relationships with communities throughout Texas.

The Texas Democratic Party congratulates Senator-elect Talarico, Governor-elect Hinojosa and every Democratic candidate who earned the confidence of voters tonight. We are grateful to the thousands of volunteers, organizers, campaign staff and supporters who worked throughout this election and to the millions of Texans who participated in our democracy.

This election was powered by Texas Together, a $40 million statewide coordinated campaign led by the Texas Democratic Party, the campaigns of Talarico, Hinojosa and Lt. Gov. candidate Vikki Goodwin, and Texas Majority PAC, along with countless congressional, legislative and judicial candidates and Democratic clubs from one end of the state to the other.  Texas Together supported candidates, county parties and allied organizations across the state. With more than 30,000 volunteers engaged and 88 staff on the ground, the effort worked to reach millions of Texans in all 254 counties. This historic investment in organizing and community engagement is part of our long-term commitment to building a stronger Democratic coalition in Texas.

The results of this election provide momentum for our work moving forward. The Texas Democratic Party will keep building on this by strengthening our organizational infrastructure statewide. We thank the thousands of volunteers, organizers and supporters who made this campaign possible. This is just the beginning.
