Greg Abbott’s Administration Discussed Selling Beloved State Park to Trillionaire Elon Musk [Texas Monthly]

DALLAS, TX – Career politician Greg Abbott’s administration discussed selling more than 1,000 acres of Texas’s Boca Chica State Park to trillionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX, according to explosive new reporting from Texas Monthly.

The discussions were so far along that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission – whose members were all appointed and/or reappointed by Greg Abbott – planned to take up the potential sale during a closed door meeting on November 5 – two days after the election.

It’s just the latest example of Greg Abbott putting Musk’s business interests over rising prices and concerns facing working Texans.

Earlier this year, Musk donated $500,000 to Abbott’s reelection campaign. Approximately three months later, Abbott signed off nearly $2 billion in property tax breaks for Musk’s TeraFab AI project, making Musk the single largest beneficiary of Texas’s Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.

Abbott also handed Musk’s SpaceX a $30 million grant this summer through the Texas Enterprise Fund.

“Texas is not for sale. Public land belongs to the people of Texas – not the world’s richest man. The choice in this race could not be more clear. Gina Hinojosa is fighting to bring down costs and preserve Texas’s rich land and natural resources that generations of Texans have cherished. Greg Abbott is fighting to enrich his trillionaire donors with tax breaks and sell out Texas to whomever gives him the most money. After 30 years in public office, Greg Abbott has lost his way and made his priorities known: he’s for Elon Musk. Gina Hinojosa is for you,” said Texas Democratic Party spokesman Jacob Long.

  • Abbott-appointed commissioners discussed selling Boca Chica State Park to SpaceX. Two sources told Texas Monthly that Elon Musk’s SpaceX was the prospective buyer of the 1,300-acre beachfront state park.

  • The potential sale was slated for discussion two days after the election. A draft Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission agenda called for discussing the 1,300-acre Cameron County property in a closed-door executive session on November 5.

  • The item disappeared after Texas Monthly started asking questions. TPWD then said the commission was “not considering the sale” at its November meeting, but did not answer questions about the prior discussions, Musk’s involvement, why the agenda changed, or whether a sale could be considered later.

  • Texas has repeatedly accommodated SpaceX at Boca Chica. In 2024, TPWD agreed to a proposed exchange giving SpaceX 43 acres of Boca Chica State Park for other land before SpaceX withdrew; lawmakers later gave Musk’s Starbase partial control over closures of Boca Chica’s public beaches.

  • The land is environmentally sensitive public property. Texas acquired Boca Chica State Park in 1994 from The Nature Conservancy, and the area protects habitat for endangered wildlife including the ocelot. Environment Texas called it “some of the most sensitive” land in the state.
