Greg Abbott is for Elon/Musk, Gina Hinojosa is for Texas

DALLAS, TX – New reporting from the Houston Chronicle today makes crystal clear just how much Elon Musk has riding on career politician Greg Abbott’s re-election – and just how far Abbott has gone to prioritize the world’s richest man over rising costs facing working Texas families.

The Chronicle reports that earlier this summer Abbott signed off on nearly $2 billion in property tax breaks for Musk’s TeraFab AI project, making Musk the single largest beneficiary of Texas’s Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program. Abbott also handed Musk’s SpaceX a $30 million grant this summer through the Texas Enterprise Fund.

Notably, those incentives came about three months after Musk poured $500,000 into Abbott’s campaign, while his broader political operation continues to influence Texas races statewide.

And the special relationship between Abbott and Musk doesn’t end there.

The Chronicle recounts how Musk once called Abbott while the governor was having dinner with his wife on Valentine’s Day because Musk wanted to know whether Abbott “would have his back.”

Abbott’s response: “I said 100%.”

“The contrast in this race could not be more clear. Gina Hinojosa is fighting to save public schools, lower property taxes, and bring prices down for working Texas families. Greg Abbott is focused on giving massive tax breaks and incentives to the world’s richest man. After 30 years in public office, Greg Abbott has made his priorities clear: he’s for Elon/Musk. Gina Hinojosa is for you,” said Texas Democratic Party spokesman Jacob Long.

  • Abbott signed off on nearly $1.7 billion in tax breaks for Musk’s Terafab project — more than half of the $2.2 billion awarded through the JETI program since its creation in 2023.

  • Abbott’s office gave SpaceX another $30 million grant through the Texas Enterprise Fund. Altogether, Abbott’s office has overseen tens of millions in grants and more than $1.6 billion in tax incentives for Musk’s companies.

  • Musk gave $500,000 to Abbott’s reelection campaign in May. The New York Times also reported that canvassers for Musk’s America PAC in Texas are being instructed to target Gina Hinojosa.

  • Abbott says Musk once interrupted his Valentine’s Day dinner to ask whether the governor would “have his back.” Abbott’s response: “I said 100%.” Abbott has also called Musk Texas’ “leading economic developer.”

  • Hinojosa says she would “end corporate welfare” and redirect money going to major corporations toward lowering Texans’ property taxes. She also called Texas’ new business courts a “kind of concierge court for corporate CEOs,” saying CEOs should be treated “just like every other Texan.”
