FOLLOW THE MONEY: Greg Abbott Accepts Millions More from Data Center Special Interests
DALLAS, TX – Career politician Greg Abbott wants Texas communities to believe that he’s suddenly getting tough on data centers.
His latest campaign finance report tells a different story as his administration tries to keep basic information about data centers hidden from the public.
In the third quarter reporting period, Abbott accepted another $2.5 million from donors connected to the data center industry – adding to the more than $20 million he already accepted from data center special interests over the course of his long political career.
The new contributions follow years of Abbott rolling out the red carpet for data centers, championing Texas as the “epicenter of AI development”, and supporting some of the largest tax breaks in the nation for the industry that cost the state more than $1 billion every year.
Now, Abbott and his administration are in court fighting to keep Texans from finding out where data centers are located and how much water and energy they’re truly using.
“Greg Abbott’s sudden crackdown on data centers starts to look a lot different when you follow the money. He’s pretending to act tough on the industry while at the same time taking millions more from data center interests and fighting to keep the public in the dark about what data centers are doing to their communities. Abbott can announce all the permit moratoriums and audits he wants, but these donations tell Texans exactly where his true loyalties lie. If Governor Flip Flop were really serious about putting Texas communities first, he would return all these contributions immediately and tell the data center industry to keep their money,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
