House Republicans Pass Legislation to Make Voter Registration Harder, Potentially Disenfranchise Millions

AUSTIN, Texas – Last night, House Republicans passed Chip Roy’s SAVE Act, aiming to ban undocumented immigrants from voting — something that's already a crime. Instead of solving a real problem, this bill adds unnecessary barriers to voter registration, making it harder for people to legally cast their ballots, and could even disenfranchise millions of Americans.

Republicans have gone searching for evidence of this problem and found effectively nothing” – why are they so determined to make it more difficult for Americans to vote?

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder issued the following statement:

“We're no strangers to attempts to undermine the right to vote. Since our founding, there have always been those who try to divide us through fear and misinformation. The so-called 'SAVE Act' is just the latest chapter in a long history of regressive politics aimed at restricting our freedoms.

“I’m all for solving problems – the only issue is, one doesn’t exist here. Millions of Americans might actually lose their right to vote if this legislation were to become law. We’ve worked hard to make it easier for working folks to legally cast their ballots, not more difficult. We can’t let Republicans take their voices away.”
