BREAKING: Two Minnesota State Lawmakers Shot in Targeted Attacks
AUSTIN, Texas –Two Minnesota state lawmakers, State Senator John Hoffman and State Representative Melissa Hortman, were shot in their homes early this morning by a suspect impersonating a law enforcement officer. Both are members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, which is affiliated with the national Democratic Party, and the attacks are believed to have been targeted. Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark have tragically lost their lives. In response, Governor Tim Walz has activated the State Emergency Operations Center, and a manhunt is actively underway to apprehend the suspect.
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder released the following statement:
“There is no place in our country for political violence. Minnesota state Senator Hoffman and State Representative Hortman were subjects of a violent attack that took the lives of Representative Hortman and her husband. I join Minnesotans in denouncing this violent act, praying for the recovery of Senator Hoffman, and calling on Republicans across the country to condemn acts of violence such as this one so they will not happen again.
“I commend Governor Walz for taking swift action to protect the public and ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice. My heart goes out to the families of Representative Hortman and Senator Hoffman, and we will be keeping them in our prayers in Texas.”
