Almost a Year Later, Texans Just Now Learning the Full Story of Ruben Martinez’s Death

Dallas - Fort Worth– Almost a year after Ruben Ray Martinez was shot and killed by an ICE agent during an encounter on South Padre Island, Texans are only now learning critical details about what happened. Reporting this week revealed the involvement of the ICE agent and confirmed that the Texas Rangers investigation remains “ongoing.” Yet major questions remain — including why witness accounts appear to conflict with the official version and why it took almost a year for the public to learn key facts about a Texan’s death.

“Governor Abbott says he’s making Texas safer — but safer for whom?” said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder. “When a Texan is killed and families have to wait almost a year for basic transparency, that’s not public safety — that’s a failure of accountability. Texans deserve the truth, and they deserve leadership that values human life over political talking points.”
