CORRECTING THE RECORD: Multiple Border Sheriffs Say They Did Not Endorse Greg Abbott

DALLAS, TX – Career politician Greg Abbott’s desperate attempt to manufacture bipartisan support among Texas law enforcement officers is unraveling before his very eyes as at least three Democratic sheriffs from border communities say they’re not backing Abbott for re-election.

On Monday, Abbott announced that 12 Democratic sheriffs were endorsing him, saying he was “honored” to have their support. But as it turns out, one fourth of that list isn’t true according to the sheriffs themselves.

  • Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar told Border Report no one from the governor’s office asked for his endorsement and he was “shocked” to see his name on the list, adding: “I’m not supporting him.”

  • Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez said: “I want to make it unequivocally clear that I have not issued a political endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott, and I did not authorize anyone to use my name as an endorsement.”

  • Zapata County Sheriff Ramon Montes also publicly confirmed he is not endorsing Abbott.

“It’s beyond disrespectful the way Greg Abbott continues to treat Texas law enforcement. First he threatened to defund them by hundreds of millions of dollars. Now he’s lying to voters about their endorsements to try and save his failing campaign. Texas sheriffs deserve so much better than to be treated as a political prop. Greg Abbott should immediately apologize to these sheriffs, work to correct the record, and explain to voters how their names ended up on his list in the first place,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
