Signed, Sealed, Delivered: President Biden and Texas Democrats Help Save the Postal Service
The Postal Service Reform Act that President Biden signed today will mean continued prompt mail delivery and dependable postal service after Trump-era efforts to cut U.S. Postal Service delivery
AUSTIN, Texas -Today, President Biden signed the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 into law. This bill is the most significant overhaul of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) in almost 20 years and will help shore up the agency to address delays in mail delivery acrossTexas that came to light during the pandemic. The new law, which was supported by every Texas Democrat in Congress, stands in stark contrast to Trump-era efforts to cut USPS delivery.
Here’s just some of that this new law means for people in Texas is:
- protecting reliable delivery of everything from medication for seniors to household items for Texas families;
- continued mail delivery service 6 days a week;
- new transparency standards to hold USPS accountable for delays;
- opportunities for local, state and Indigenous governments to offer certain non-mail services, like hunting and fishing licenses;
- support for rural newspapers that may qualify for reduced mailing fees;
- and more.
“Texans rely on our postal system every day to do everything from get prescription medications and paychecks, to voting, to keeping in touch with friends and family. And small businesses across Texas depend on the postal service to get their goods to customers across the country,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. “While some Republicans in Congress failed to prioritize the future and dependability of our postal service, President Biden and Texas Democrats have made sure with the Postal Service Reform Act that Texans can continue to rely on the USPS and see reliable deliveries and expanded services.”
