Texas Democratic Party Statement on Secretary of State Jane Nelson

Secretary Jane Nelson’s resignation marks the end of a tenure marked by controversy and mismanagement. As Governor Greg Abbott’s appointee, she had dealt two constitutional jobs and she failed miserably at the one that required the public trust. She oversaw the sharing of voter data for more than 18 million Texans with the federal government, raising serious privacy concerns, while her office also presided over significant problems with the state’s voter registration database that disrupted voter outreach and campaign operations.

Texans deserve a Secretary of State who protects voters’ information, administers elections competently, and puts the public interest ahead of politics.
