There were a few moments earlier this year where you promised Texans that gas prices would fall below $2 a gallon “by the end of summer.”

Well, today marks the official end of summer – and Texans want to know why you lied to them.

Instead of $2 gas, Texas families, farmers, and truckers are facing record-high prices at the pump as the Iran war drives up diesel fuel to nearly $6/gal. And that’s not all.

The conflict is also costing American taxpayers nearly $40 billion and is expected to push inflation even higher, adding more pressure to consumer prices at a time when drivers have already spent more than $100 billion extra on fuel.

But as Texans get stuck with higher prices, billionaires and big corporations that have poured money into keeping Abbott in office are set to make a fortune. Abbott has accepted nearly $14 million in political contributions from oil and gas companies and leading defense contractors – and their executives.

“Career politician Greg Abbott is talking out of both sides of his mouth. He says he wants to make Texas the most affordable state in the nation. Why hasn’t he done it yet after 30 years in public office? Since day one, he’s supported this war that’s made life significantly more expensive for Texans. And while other Republican governors have taken decisive action to offset rising prices, like suspending gas taxes, Abbott has thrown up his hands and done nothing except make empty promises about $2 gas. This raises a very straightforward question – whose side is Greg Abbott on? The everyday Texans feeling the pain at the pump or the billionaires that have bankrolled his political career and stand to profit from more conflict and higher prices?” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
