Texas Republicans Again Let Donald Trump’s Map Take Priority Over Flood Victims
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder issued the following statement on Texas Republicans speeding through Donald Trump’s racially discriminatory congressional maps:
“Texas Republicans again revealed their true colors by fast-tracking Donald Trump’s map through the legislature, and getting it one step closer to Abbott’s desk. For weeks, they complained about the “Quorum Breaking” Democrats delaying flood relief for Central Texas flood victims, but once they achieved quorum, they made the map the top priority. The ONLY item on today’s agenda was politics.
“The RGV congressional districts should not cross border patrol checkpoints, but they stretch into Central Texas. A district near Sulphur Springs should not extend to Fort Worth, but it does. The Governor’s Mansion should not be in the same district as someone living in Midland, but it is.
“This was a deliberate violation of the Voting Rights Act, aimed at diluting the voices of minority voters across the state. This cracking of majority-minority districts is disgraceful, and it’s all to help Donald Trump avoid accountability for his actions. This fight is far from over. We, and the American people, will see this map in court.”
