Chairman Hinojosa Releases Statement on Supreme Court Upholding Democracy in Moore v. Harper

AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on the Supreme Court upholding democracy nationwide in the North Carolina Moore v. Harper case:

“After President Biden’s victory in 2020, far-right, treasonous ultra-MAGA Republican elected officials across the country swiftly moved to nullify the results of the free and fair election – simply because they didn’t like its outcome. Even right here in Texas, just this past legislative session, we saw Texas Republicans strip huge swaths of power away from local elections officials in big, Democratic cities and counties because they wanted more control over elections moving forward.

“In Moore v. Harper, some of these same fringe extremists tried to lay a path wherein these anti-democratic efforts would be successful moving forward. We are relieved that the Court decisively rejected these extreme Republicans’ anti-American arguments and maintained the integrity of our nation’s democracy.

“What Republicans in North Carolina tried to do was essentially argue that state legislatures should have unchecked power over election laws – without the American system of checks and balances to keep them in line. We know what Republicans want to do if given complete and total control – and it would be to turn our flourishing country into a dystopian authoritarian state, where far-right laws are forced upon citizens who don’t have an equal voice in elections. Today, we avoided a constitutional crisis.

“In addition, this case also represents the third time this session that the Court – which is majority-conservative – has voiced that Republicans have gone too far in trying to dilute the power of Black and Brown voters. As we said in the Alabama case: we hope Texas Republicans – who have a proven track record of cracking and packing Black and Brown Texans into district lines as they see fit – are taking notice. Democracy is winning – and will continue to win.”
