Texas Democrats on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa and Co-Executive Director Jamarr Brown issued the following statement:
“Today we celebrate not only Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, but the expectations he set for America. Dr. King dreamed of a society that respects the rights and restores the dignity of all people, regardless of color or creed, gender or ethnicity. This year, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with our heartfelt sentiment and our promise to fulfill his dream of a more just and equitable society. His spirit marches on in our fight to protect the civil rights and voting rights of all Americans.
“All across the country, and especially here in Texas, we are again facing attacks on our voting rights. Texas Republicans have pushed through some of the most egregious voter suppression legislation in our country’s recent history-aimed at silencing the voices and blocking the votes of millions of Black and Hispanic voters. With Texas’ first major election under the Republicans’ new anti-democratic legislation this year, 0ur democracy is at risk of becoming a relic of the past. Enacting federal legislation with voter protections and electing Democrats is our only way to defeat voter suppression and preserve our democracy.
"Texas Democrats have spoken with one voice from the start: we will do whatever it takes to protect the freedom to vote. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we call on every American to take action and urge members of the U.S. Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Until this passes, we will not live in the society Dr. King and other courageous freedom fighters fought so fearlessly to secure.
“In the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr., the Civil Rights movement, and all those who have fought for racial justice, we will not give up on your dream for a better America -we will carry the torch and we will march on!”
