Texas Democratic Party Responds to Governor Abbott’s Latest Attack on Transgender Children
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on Greg Abbott’s latest move:
“Governor Abbott and his Republican colleagues have made it clear that they have no respect for transgender children or their parents. His latest order is not only full throated assault on transgender rights, but an all out war on the LGBTQ+ community.”
“At every turn, Texas Republicans have done all that they can to strip the basic human rights from vulnerable communities. This is just their latest move to continue decades of oppression on marginalized communities. It’s cruel and downright disgusting to think that in this day and age basic human rights are being stripped away from children.”
“The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is already strapped for the resources they need to protect children across our state. Instead of investing in the department to treat legitimate cases of neglect and abuse, the governor has chosen to further exacerbate the problem and create a culture war that is meritless. Parents and trained medical professionals should be making decisions for children, not Gov. Abbott from the governor's mansion.”
“Let me be clear, this is not about prioritizing the health and well-being of children across the state. This is an effort by the governor and his corrupt counterparts to distract the public from their inability to lead. The Texas Democratic Party is committed to fighting for the rights of all Texans and ensuring that the LGBTQ+ community is protected from these egregious acts of government overreach. If the governor wishes to protect children across the state of Texas he should prioritize strengthening social safety nets, public education, and funding to the appropriate agencies. Once again we have seen the failures of Republican leadership. Parents should have the freedom to raise and protect their children, and we will not let Republicans strip them of this right.”
