Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa Releases Statement on SCOTUS Gun Ruling

AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen:

“As Democrats, we have no interest in infringing on the Second Amendment – but we will make damn sure that guns are only in the hands of responsible, law-abiding citizens, and that they are treated with the responsibility they require. We’re devastated to see the Supreme Court – in an especially tone-deaf move at this point in time – doesn’t seem to feel the same way.

“Today’s ruling is yet another senseless, enormous expansion of access to guns in this country, already a country with more guns than people.

“After every Uvalde; every El Paso; every Sutherland Springs; and every weekend shooting in Dallas, Houston, or any city in Texas; we sit back and wonder helplessly why these shootings continue to happen. There’s nothing to wonder: this is a country saturated with guns, and Donald Trump’s far-right Supreme Court just made it even moreso.

“In the wake of this ruling, we again, exhaustedly, call on Governor Abbott and Texas Republicans to hold a special legislative session to address gun violence prevention with real laws – not meaningless platitudes.”
