Chairman Hinojosa Releases Statement on Republicans’ Proposed National Abortion Ban
AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Republicans in Washington are introducing legislation to pass a national abortion ban. This national abortion ban legislation comes on the heels of the extreme abortion ban in Texas, which has no exceptions for rape or incest. This legislation is being spearheaded by Susan B. Anthony List – an extreme anti-choice advocacy group that seeks to end abortion.
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa – who just sent a letter to all local Democratic leaders in Texas urging them to mobilize women specifically on the issue of abortion – today released the following statement on the introduction of this legislation to ban abortion nationwide, ahead of Attorney General Nominee Rochelle Garza’s press conference in El Paso today on how Democrats will deliver for abortion access in Texas when we win in November:
“For decades, Republicans have tried to convince voters that all they wanted was for abortion to become a state issue. Today, they have shown their hand: it was all a lie. They just want to control women’s bodies and force women to give birth – nationwide.
“If this sounds horrifying and dystopian, it’s because it is.
“Here in Texas, Greg Abbott and Republicans have enacted one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country – with no exceptions for rape or incest. They overplayed their hand. They thought they could take women for granted, driving their extreme agenda as far as they possibly could, pushing voters to the brink. But in recent months, we’ve seen Texas voters – especially young Texans and Texan women – begin to push back like never before.
“From Democratic-led counties across Texas working to protect abortion access, to this new proposed nationwide abortion ban – we have seen this to be true: abortion is on every single line of the ballot.
“At every level, Republicans have shown they cannot be trusted with power. In eight weeks, we will show them just how dramatically they miscalculated their constituents. In eight weeks, we will vote these Republicans out of office, at every level of government.”
