After Calling Bipartisan Infrastructure Law “Wasteful,” Mayra Flores Celebrates Infrastructure Funding Going to South Texas

BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- After calling President Biden’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law “wasteful” – and calling Republicans who voted for the bill “the RINO Bunch” and urging their constituents to “vote them out” – newly-elected Congresswoman Mayra Flores is now touting federal infrastructure dollars following to South Texas.

She joins in spirit a long line of Republicans who have famously recently “voted no and taken the dough” – refusing to support critical investments in their communities so they can keep their far-right partisan allegiance, and then being the first to show up at a proverbial ribbon-cutting ceremony. (This list includes fellow Texas Republicans Kay Granger and Tony Gonzalez, among others).

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on Congresswoman Flores’ rank hypocrisy:

“It’s disappointing – but not at all surprising – that D.C. Republicans’ newest recruit Mayra Flores would show the exact shameless hypocrisy that her colleagues have shown for years.

“I’m angry that millions of dollars of Republican dark money successfully convinced voters in South Texas that Mayra Flores was looking out for their best interests.

“But above all, I’m saddened for the hard-working Hispanic families of the Rio Grande Valley – who now have to be represented for four more months by someone who’s shown that she cares more about putting out flashy press releases than she does actually bringing in critical resources for her district. And it’s even sadder that the people of the RGV have a Congressperson who would try to deceive them about what she’s doing for them in Washington: the truth is, if she had her way, her constituents would be left languishing without the investments their communities need.

“God forbid she cast a vote to actually help her South Texans – she might not be invited back to CPAC next year.”

Hidalgo County Democratic Party Chair Richard Gonzales released the following statement:

“Only a two-faced, lying politician like Mayra Flores would try to fool the voters. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was a huge victory for the American people and I applaud our Texas Democratic Congressional Delegation, including Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, for voting for the bill.

“Mayra Flores has shown herself to be the worst kind of hypocrite: she votes against you on Monday and then tries to tell you how hard she helped you on Friday. If Mayra lied about this, what else has she lied about?”

Cameron County Democratic Chair Jared Hockema released the following statement:

“Republicans must have a low opinion of South Texas voters if they think we’ll be fooled by such obvious lies. People down here know who’s on their side, working to get good things done for them, and it sure isn’t Mayra Flores. The Valley needs a straight-talking, hardworking Congressman like Vicente Gonzalez to ensure that our needs are met – not a hypocritical, radical extremist who spends all her time on TV spreading lies.”
