During the Coronavirus Crisis, Cornyn is Still Trying to Strip Health Care Access from Texans
Austin, TX — Three years ago, John Cornyn, known as Affordable Care Act repeal’s “top salesman,” cast his 20th vote in his failed crusade to repeal the Affordable Care Act and shred its protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
If Cornyn’s so-called “skinny repeal” had passed, it could have:
- Sent “insurance markets into a death spiral.”
- Increased premiums by an average of $1,238.
- Allowed states to opt out of requiring insurers cover essential health benefits.
- Defunded Planned Parenthood.
- Eliminated the Prevention and Public Health Fund, including its resources to prevent the spread of pandemic diseases.
Since then, Cornyn has continued to undermine Texans’ access to health care. Cornyn played a “critical role” in passing the DC tax scam that opened the door for indicted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawsuit to dismantle the ACA. Cornyn has also continued to support and vote for “junk” insurance plans that often don’t cover people with pre-existing conditions and allow insurers to charge higher premiums based on “health status, gender, age, and other factors.”
Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:
“Three years ago today, John Cornyn’s crusade to repeal the ACA and its protections for people with pre-existing conditions was repulsed again. Undeterred — and now amidst a public health crisis — Cornyn continues to undermine Texans’ ability to access quality, affordable health care by supporting junk plans and opening the door to Ken Paxton’s lawsuit to dismantle the ACA.
“Now more than ever, Texans are in need of a real leader like MJ Hegar who has proven she will put the lives and well being of Texans above all else.”
