Over 5,000 Texans Have Died from COVID-19 as Senator Cornyn Downplays Crisis

Austin, TX — This weekend the state of Texas passed a grim milestone, with 5,000 Texans now having died from COVID-19. 1,000 of those deaths have come within the last week. In addition, yesterday the Texas Department of State Health Services announced the true death toll is 13% higher than previously thought — in reality, over 5,700 Texans have died of the virus.

Senator John Cornyn has downplayed, ignored, and mishandled the coronavirus crisis since it began. In March, Cornyn callously tweeted a picture of a Corona beer and said that dealing with COVID-19 would be a “piece of cake.” In addition, Cornyn defied public health experts and pushed for Texas to reopen prematurely, saying that reopening the economy and risking “more sickness and death” was a “necessary trade-off.”

Recently, Cornyn falsely and dangerously claimed, “We still don’t know whether children can get [coronavirus] and transmit it to others” and that “no one under the age of 20 has died of the coronavirus” in an attempt to justify forcing schools to reopen.

Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:

“Over 5,000 Texas families are grieving the loss of a loved one due to COVID-19. In addition, 1.6 million Texans have lost their livelihoods during this pandemic. It didn’t have to be this bad — the failed leadership of John Cornyn has contributed to the pain and suffering Texans are feeling across the state. Rather than taking the threat of COVID-19 seriously and listening to public health experts, Cornyn has downplayed the virus and played political games with Texans’ lives. We are now experiencing the consequences of Cornyn’s failures.”
