John Cornyn Keeps Trying to Explain Away His False Statement that “We Still Don’t Know Whether Children Can Get” COVID-19

Austin, TX — Last week, vulnerable incumbent Senator John Cornyn elicited backlash and fact-checks after falsely claiming, “We still don’t know whether children can get” COVID-19 on NBC DFW.

Rather than admit his mistake, Cornyn has spent the last several days intentionally muddying the waters around coronavirus facts in an attempt to make his blatant falsehood seem plausible.

On Saturday, Cornyn sent a series of tweets casting doubt on whether one should take advice from medical experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Today, Cornyn tweeted an article, saying, “How Do Children Spread the Coronavirus? The Science Still Isn’t Clear,” in an apparent attempt to justify his misleading comment from several days prior. It is worth noting that the article Cornyn tweeted today disproves his false statement on NBC DFW and in no way disputes a child’s ability to contract and spread coronavirus.

Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:

“Cornyn has incessantly downplayed the severity of COVID-19 — from his callous tweet of a Corona beer to his outright disinformation he told to NBC DFW last week. Texans are suffering from coronavirus because of failed Republican leadership, yet John Cornyn continues to care more about muddying the waters around his own screw ups than telling the truth to the people of Texas. It’s shameful.”
