Austin, TX — Vulnerable Texas Senator John Cornyn filed a bill claiming it will “ensure Texans don’t lose health coverage” in a desperate attempt to run away from his terrible record attacking Texans’ access to quality, affordable health care.
Here are the facts on Cornyn’s flimsy, election year bill:
FACT: Cornyn’s bill only subsidizes employer-provided health insurance plans that do not provide abortion coverage. In other words, Cornyn’s bill DOES NOT apply to 90% of employer provided health insurance plans.
FACT: Rather than delivering meaningful legislation for Texans in need of health care, Cornyn used the pandemic as an excuse to further attack women’s reproductive rights.
FACT: If Senator Cornyn were serious about ensuring unemployed Texans have access to health care during this pandemic, he would demand his political allies stop their lawsuit to rip away key health care protections and push the Trump administration to open up a special enrollment period for coverage under the ACA.
Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:
“Senator Cornyn’s latest bill is nothing more than a feeble, embarrassing attempt to district from the fact that he has been the single greatest threat to Texans’ ability to access quality, affordable health care. Texas voters won’t fall for this election-year ploy — they know that Cornyn has continuously tried to take away their health care, even in the midst of a public health crisis.”
