Austin, Texas — Senator John Cornyn is rushing to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court, breaking the precedent he set four years prior. Just this morning, Cornyn emphasized that “I think we need to get it done before the election.” It makes sense that Cornyn is in such a hurry to fill this seat; he’s been known as the “top salesman” for repealing the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with preexisting conditions, and he’s now trying to dismantle the ACA in the Supreme Court by confirming an overtly anti-health care justice. Rushing this nominee’s confirmation before the election would ensure she’s on the court to hear the Affordable Care Act case before the Supreme Court on November 10.
Cornyn’s nominee has an abysmal record on health care:
Cornyn’s nominee attacked the Supreme Court’s decision that upheld the ACA and allowed millions to maintain affordable access to health care, calling it “illegitimate.” She also agreed with a dissenting opinion arguing to strike down the ACA’s subsidies, which have allowed millions of Americans to afford private health insurance.
Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:
“Senator Cornyn’s rush to abandon precedent and jam through an overtly anti-health care justice for a lifetime appointment is simply his latest attempt to strip millions of Texans of their access to health care. Texans are sick and tired of being lied to by career politicians like Senator Cornyn and are done being sold out.”
