Austin, TX — Senator John Cornyn told a whopper of a lie this morning:
“This pandemic is something that nobody saw coming.”
Hours later, journalist Bob Woodward exposed Cornyn’s lie when he revealed audio recordings on which Trump admitted he lied to the public about how serious the pandemic was:
“President Donald Trump admitted he knew weeks before the first confirmed US coronavirus death that the virus was dangerous, airborne, highly contagious and ‘more deadly than even your strenuous flus,’ and that he repeatedly played it down publicly…”
In fact, Cornyn himself knew the threat COVID-19 posed before it reached Texas. Cornyn sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee and began receiving briefings on the dangers of COVID-19 in early February. By the end of February, Cornyn was being updated on a daily basis.
Despite his advance warning of the dangers posed by the coronavirus, Cornyn repeatedly downplayed the severity of the crisis. On February 7, Trump admitted to Woodward that “the coronavirus was maybe five times ‘more deadly’ than the flu.” But a month later, Cornyn continued to downplay the virus, calling COVID-19 a “so-called pandemic,” saying “most of us” if infected would “get flu-like symptoms, and you’ll get over it in a relatively short period of time.”
Texas Democratic Party Cornyn War Room Spokesperson Billy Begala released the following statement:
“John Cornyn is lying to cover for his abysmal handling of the coronavirus crisis. We knew that Cornyn was briefed on the threat of COVID-19 in early February. Now, we also know that the President knew the dangers posed by COVID-19 before the virus exploded in the U.S. Instead of being honest with the American people, Cornyn and his D.C. cronies chose to play politics with people’s lives, and Texans are suffering because of it.”
