Senate Republicans led by Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn voted to acquit President Donald Trump. They have undermined our national security, legitimized foreign interference in our elections, and allowed our president to extort other countries for personal gain. Despite the overwhelming evidence that substantiates his guilt, Donald Trump has been handed a two-part victory. The first is clear: he will not be removed from office. However the second is much more dangerous: Donald Trump has convinced the Republican Party that retaining the presidency is the utmost priority, even if it means sidestepping the U.S. Constitution in the process.
During the House inquiry, Republicans, motivated by toxic partisanship, rehearsed their talking points of a “fair trial.” They selectively chose the aspects of the U.S. Constitution worth shouting and cast the other equally important governing principles aside. However, when it came time for Senate Republicans to fulfill their role in the impeachment process, they changed their strategy. Throughout the Senate impeachment trial, Republican Senators like John Cornyn actively worked to suppress the truth. They no longer circulated false intentions of upholding the U.S. Constitution, instead, they collectively dishonored the framework of the United States by condoning the president’s violation and corruption of the law.
Acquitting the president would require a careful analysis of the facts. Acquitting the president requires a fair trial. An acquittal after this blatant cover-up means nothing. Every senator who voted against having witnesses is complicit in one of the biggest blows to our democracy this nation has ever seen.
“It is the solemn duty of the Senate to seek justice, deliver a full and fair trial, and uphold the Constitution,” Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement. “We watched as Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn, acquitted this corrupt president and administration.”
Whether Senate Republicans wish to admit it or not, the U.S. Constitution was assembled in defiance of a monarchy. The framers intended our system of government to prohibit a concentration of power in one body. The checks and balances system is what has allowed the American experiment to last as long as it has. Today’s vote poses an unprecedented threat to the democratic institutions upon which the United States is able to stand. Trump pressured a foreign country to interfere in our elections — for his own personal gain. If that’s not impeachable, nothing is.
Texas Democrats will continue fighting for the people of Texas. We will stand tall in the face of corruption and advocate for those who Donald Trump and the Republican Party have left behind. We will continue to hold John Cornyn accountable, because not only is he burying the truth, he’s placing his own political power above the integrity of the office he was elected to serve. Our country deserves better. The people of Texas deserve better. As voters head to the polls this November, they will remember who John Cornyn fought for when it really mattered. They will remember that he is the last person who deserves to represent the state of Texas in the U.S. Senate.
