RELEASE: The Texas Democratic Party Announces Partnership with Fair Fight Action to Build the Largest Voter Protection Program in Texas History

Austin, TX — Today, the Texas Democratic Party announced the details of our new innovative Voter Protection program in partnership with Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight Action. The program will be the largest in Texas history and make it easier—not harder—for Texans to vote.

Texas Republicans have made it harder to vote at every turn, by implementing restrictive voting policies such as voter ID restrictions, shortening the days of early voting, closing polling locations, and attempting to purge lawful Texans from the voting rolls.

Texas Democrats are already fighting back. In addition to filing three separate lawsuits fighting back against various Republican attempts to make it harder for Texans to vote, this month the Texas Democratic Party launched our voter assistance hotline 1-844-TX-VOTES.

Now, with the help of Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight Action, the Texas Democratic Party is taking our voter protection efforts even further. In partnership with Fair Fight Action, the Texas Democratic Party’s new, groundbreaking voter protection program will include:

  • A new, full-time voter protection team led by Rose Clouston, previously the Director of Online Trainings at the National Democratic Training Committee and a National Coordinator for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law’s Election Protection program.

  • A voter assistance hotline where voters can get the information they need to register and vote and can report any irregularities or obstacles to voting to trained experts and lawyers. For any irregularities, questions about voting, or to share their voting experience, Texans can call 1-844-TX-VOTES (1-844-898-6837).

  • A voter protection council where hundreds of Democratic volunteers devoted to voter protection efforts will keep a watchful eye on the full range of voting developments in Texas.

  • A poll watching program where a dedicated team of volunteers will help voters navigate the voting process, guarantee their questions are being answered, and ensure their votes are being counted at the polls in November.

  • The continued use of MyTexasVotes.com, our one-stop voter information shop for any questions voters might have across the state. Started in 2014, MyTexasVotes.com has helped hundreds of thousands of voters locate their polling locations, access information on registering to vote, voting by mail, voter ID, and more.

Texas Democratic Party Voter Protection Director Rose Clouston issued the following statement:

“For years, Texas Republicans have attempted to consolidate power and discriminate against the rising Texas electorate, making it harder for Texans to vote. With the launch of the Texas Democratic Party’s innovative Voter Protection Program, the Texas Democratic Party will empower and support Texans to take their vote — and their power — back from Republicans.

“Texas is the biggest battleground state in the country. As Texas Democrats begin to register voters and prepare for 2020, voters want assurances that their vote will count. That’s why in partnership with Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight Action, the Texas Democratic Party is putting innovative resources and programs on the ground to ensure that every eligible Texan’s vote counts. We thank Leader Abrams and Fair Fight Action for their commitment to Texas and their steadfast partnership in helping Texas Democrats fight back against Texas Republicans’ attempts to prevent Texans from having their voices heard.

“Texas Democrats are rising. With plans to run the largest coordinated campaign in Texas history and with the launch of the biggest voter registration program in Texas, there has never been a better time to be a Texas Democrat. We will win the White House, take out John Cornyn, send more Texas Democrats to Congress, break the supermajority in the Texas Senate, flip the Texas House, and elect hundreds of local Democrats across the state.”
