Texas Republican Senators Cruz and Cornyn Must Withdraw Endorsement and Condemn Roy Moore

Austin, TX — Today, the Washington Post reported that “Roy Moore, the Alabama Republican nominee in an upcoming Senate special election to succeed U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, tried to become romantically involved with four girls between the ages of 14 and 18 while he was in his 30s…” [Texas Tribune, November 9, 2017] U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have both endorsed Moore in his bid.

Additional Background:

  • When Senator John Cornyn endorsed Roy Moore, the Dallas Morning News Editorial Board said that “Sen. John Cornyn’s endorsement this week of Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate from Alabama is a new low not just for the former jurist and ex-Texas attorney general, but for the party he claims to love.” [Dallas Morning News, October 26, 2017]

  • Ted Cruz said that Moore is, “a conservative who will proudly defend Alabama values.” [Houston Chronicle, October 24, 2017]

Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Crystal K. Perkins issued the following statement:

“Roy Moore’s history of preying on underage women is vile and sickening. There is no place for someone like Moore in American society much less the United States Senate.

“Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz embraced Roy Moore in the past and endorsed his candidacy.

“Today, Texas Democrats call on Cruz and Cornyn to immediately withdraw their endorsement. I pray they find a conscious and put country over misogyny.”
