Austin, TX — The Texas Tribune reported today that Democratic Senate contender and U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-El Paso) has raised $2.1 million in the first quarter of his grassroots campaign to unseat U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, with none of the contributions coming from PACs or corporate donors.

“[$2.1 million] is quite large for a challenger to a sitting Senator – it surpasses the fundraising of some U.S. Senate Democratic incumbents in other states who are the subject of major party pushes to hold their seats in 2018.”
“O’Rourke has deftly built an online following in recent months and standing-room only crowds have shown up at his events across the state.”
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Texans are backing Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke’s bid to unseat Republican Ted Cruz in a big way. The facts are clear: Texas is a single-digit state and Democrats are fired up, the latest polls show state Republicans’ job performance underwater, and the Texas economy is in tailspin and Republicans have no plan.
“This year, we’re proud to welcome thousands of new activists, dozens of candidates running for Congress, and inspiring statewide candidates like Congressman O’Rourke. Up and down the ballot, Democrats are putting up impressive fundraising totals.
“Congratulations to Congressman O’Rourke. Beto’s impressive fundraising haul is yet more evidence that his positive message about the future is resonating with Texans. This is a strong start, and we look forward to continuing the fight with Beto to beat Ted Cruz.”
