Everything is on the Line in November

Austin, Texas — Following Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s tragic death on Friday, Texas voters know that everything is on the line in November.

If Trump and his stooges John Cornyn and Ted Cruz ram through a Supreme Court Justice, our healthcare, reproductive rights, immigrant rights, voting rights, and gay rights are all in jeopardy.

From the White House to the courthouse, we must elect Democrats who will protect our rights.

Here’s a brief look at what’s at stake in November:

Healthcare: The Republican lawsuit led by indicted Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton’s to repeal Affordable Care in the middle of the worst pandemic in American history is on the ballot in November. Every Texas Republican—from Donald Trump to John Cornyn to every state house candidate has to answer for the Paxton—Texas led lawsuit to repeal affordable care. We must elect MJ Hegar, who will fight to preserve and protect healthcare and ensure that a future Senate confirms justices who will do the same.

Reproductive Rights: Texas Democrats believe that every Texan should have the right to make their own decisions, including the decision to have an abortion and when and if they want to parent. Great strides to increase reproductive healthcare access are now under attack. Healthcare is a right and all Texans deserve confidential, affordable, and unrestricted access to a full range of reproductive healthcare services, including abortion. Texas Republicans have already turned our state into ground zero for some of the nation’s harshest anti-abortion legislation and in the process they have decimated reproductive healthcare in Texas, resulting in abysmal healthcare outcomes.

Immigrant Rights: Texas is home to more DREAMers than any other state in the country. Their rights are now fundamentally at-risk. DREAMers are our doctors, nurses, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, neighbors, and members of the military. DREAMers are here to stay. We need a just, fair, and comprehensive immigration reform that includes an earned path to citizenship for law-abiding immigrants and their children, keeps families together, protects DREAMers, and provides workforce solutions for businesses.

Voting Rights: Both the United States Supreme Court and the Republican Texas Supreme Court have gutted our voting rights for years and Republicans for the last century have done everything in their power to make it harder for the rising Texas electorate to make their voices heard. Every eligible Texan has the right to vote. This right should be made easier by automatic voter registration, the option to vote-by-mail, guaranteed early and mobile voting stations, and a state election holiday — free from corporate campaign influence, foreign and domestic interference, and gerrymandering. We must elect Democrats on the Texas Supreme Court—Judge Amy Clark Meachum, Judge Staci Williams, Kathy Cheng, and Gisela Triana to bring balance to the courts and put following the law over playing partisan games.

LGBTQ+ Rights: By a narrow 5-4 decision, Obergefell v. Hodges ensured same-sex couples can get married nationwide. Since then, two of the justices who made that decision have retired, putting the entire decision at risk. From bathrooms to bullying to the ballot box, LGBTQ Americans still face hurdles across our society. Everybody deserves to build a family, work, and live free from discrimination. We must elect Democrats who are proud to champion legislation to end hate crimes, fight for non-discrimination ordinances, and advance LGBTQ rights because all of us are created equal. We’ve come so far and we still have work to do.

Texas Democrats, it’s time to come together and create a movement that will fundamentally transform American politics as we know it.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“In 2020, we know that everything is on the line. We must look out for our fellow Texans and fight for each other. We must elect Democrats up and down the ballot to protect ourselves from an extremist minority Republican takeover of our courts. Republicans want to use the courts to push through laws that destroy the fundamental rights of so many Americans.

“The only way to fight back is to win at the ballot box. We must mobilize—block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, community by community. We must win in 2020. We’re fighting for everyone we know and love. Texas is the biggest battleground state. We must take back our state and our country. Our work continues right now.”
