TDP Chair: Mail Ballot Restrictions Would Have Created Chaos for November Elections

“The Supreme Court’s decision is an important recognition that the Trump administration’s attempt to impose new federal restrictions on how states administer mail-in voting was not only troubling, but dangerously disruptive. States have longstanding systems in place to administer their elections, and the federal government should not intervene at the eleventh hour to rewrite the rules and create confusion for voters and election officials.

It also makes Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to hand over Texas’ voter files to the federal government even more troubling. Abbott acted prematurely, putting Texas voters’ information in the hands of the Trump administration and sacrificing Texas’ role in administering our own elections in an evident effort to please his boss, Donald Trump.

This was an unnecessary attempt to suppress American voters eligible to vote by mail just weeks before the November election. Had these changes gone into effect, they could have created widespread confusion, delays and chaos for states, local election officials and voters. Texans deserve an election system that is secure, accessible and predictable, not one where federal officials create new barriers and throw our elections into turmoil.”
