With New Medication Abortion Restrictions Taking Effect Today And Abortion Rights More Precarious Than Ever, Texas Democrats Call For Urgent Congressional Action

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Co-Executive Director Jamarr Brown issued the following statement on the urgent need for federal abortion rights protections, given new attacks in Texas and from the Supreme Court:

“Today, just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court took up Mississippi’s attack on abortion rights, yet another restrictive anti-abortion law is taking effect in Texas. S.B. 4, Republicans’ law adding new criminal penalties for prescribing medication abortion pills via telehealth and sending them through the mail, will further gut Texans’ already-minimal access to abortion. As the Supreme Court looks poised to overturn 50 years of precedent protecting abortion rights, Texas Democrats are urgently calling on Congress to step in and pass legislation protecting this basic right to healthcare.

“Texans are entering our fourth month under Gov. Greg Abbott’s dystopian abortion ban — which is stripping millions of Texans of their constitutional right to access critical, basic healthcare and robbing people of their freedom to make their most intimate, important decisions for themselves. Abbott’s abortion ban is part and parcel of his campaign of attacks on Texans — from our voting rights, to our health and safety — in an effort to pander to far-right voters ahead of a tough primary. Texans deserve better than a governor who throws us, and our rights, under the bus for his own political gain. I’m incredibly grateful to the abortion advocates who are leading the fight to protect these most basic rights from Abbott and extremist politicians like him. Texas Democrats will always stand with abortion advocates and with the millions of Texans fighting for their rights today.

“This fall, just like yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court has shown us time after time that we can no longer rely on our nation’s highest court to uphold 50 years of precedent in Roe v. Wade. In the absence of a Supreme Court willing to defend the rights of Americans, Texas Democrats are calling on Congress to urgently pass legislation codifying abortion rights, so that Americans’ access to this basic health right is fully protected, once and for all. The rights of millions of Texans depend on it.”
