AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement on President Biden’s update on the new Omicron variant:
“I’m grateful for President Biden’s continued steady leadership as we respond to the new Omicron variant. Once again, President Biden is prioritizing the health, safety, lives, and livelihoods of Americans — and taking a science-based approach to keep Americans safe.
“As our President said today, ‘We’re throwing everything we can at this virus.’ Thanks to Democrats in the White House and in Congress, we’ve successfully implemented the most aggressive vaccination campaign in history — with 71% of U.S. adults and 86% of seniors now vaccinated against COVID-19. Meanwhile, President Biden’s American Rescue Plan got critical relief to working families and helped small businesses keep their doors open — and as he said today, ‘Even with the pandemic we’ve generated record job creation and record economic growth in this country.’ Now, President Biden’s continued push to get more people vaccinated and get more booster shots distributed will continue to protect Americans, keep our economy strong, and ultimately beat back this pandemic.
“While Democrats at the national level continue to deliver, here in Texas, we’re still facing every possible obstacle because our failed governor has refused to use common sense and take this pandemic seriously. Greg Abbott has sued local officials for taking steps to keep people safe, he’s tried to stop masking precautions in schools, and this month, his negligence meant 28 Texas ICUs were out of beds for two weeks in a row. Today, we’re seeing the devastating news that 14,000 Texas kids have lost a parent or caregiver to COVID — meaning that of the kids who have lost a parent to COVID nationwide, one in ten lives in Texas. Greg Abbott’s recklessness has taken a tragic toll, and Texans deserve better. I urge everyone to get vaccinated or get their booster to protect yourself and your loved ones. Texas Democrats will keep fighting to make this Abbott’s last year in power, and elect a Democrat who will deliver for the people of Texas.”
