Vulnerable Republicans Attempt to Enact as Many Restrictions on Women’s Healthcare As Possible

Austin, TX — The Republican assault on women’s healthcare and right to safe and legal abortion is in full force. Yesterday, the House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee led by vulnerable Republicans Jeff Leach, Morgan Meyer, and Matt Krause entertained several dangerous attacks on women.

For a full rundown of the assault on women’s rights this legislative session, see below:

  1. HB 896 by Rep. Tony Tinderholt (R-Arlington) would make abortions prosecutable as Criminal Homicide and makes the new crime applicable to women.

  2. HB 4199 by Rep. Dan Flynn (R-Van) would eliminate the “Wrongful Birth” cause of action, giving anti-choice physicians a license to lie to patients about fetus viability in order to avoid an abortion.

  3. HB 4526 by Rep. Valoree Swanson (R-Spring) would create a $30,000 civil penalty for performing an abortion.

  4. HB 2271 by Rep. Mike Lang (R-Granbury) would divert state funds to anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers across Texas.

  5. HB 16 by Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano) would create a reckless cause of action against physicians who perform abortions. (Reported favorably, April 1, 2019)

  6. HB 2350 by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R-Southlake) would outlaw abortion and create civil penalties for the performing physician. (Left pending in committee, new committee substitute language considered, April 1, 2019)

  7. HB 3605 by Rep. Scott Sanford (R-McKinney) would allow a judge to assign an attorney as a guardian ad litem to a fetus during the judicial bypass process. (Left pending in committee, April 1, 2019)
