Throwback Thursday: A Non Exhaustive Recap of Times Texas Republicans Voted Against Texans

AUSTIN, Texas — This week, in yet another landmark move, President Biden unveiled his American Families Plan, which will create groundbreaking progress on education, child care access, and health care. This is a historic step, and an eminently sensible one. It’s our leaders’ duty to act in our interest — like helping us afford care for our kids or pay for our education — and protect our rights — like our right to health care, or, for example, our right to vote.

Which brings us to Texas Republicans. Today, Texas Republicans, led by Rep. Briscoe Cain, are attempting to jam racist voter suppression bill Senate Bill 7 through the House Elections Committee and into law — with no advance notice, no chance for legislators to even read the bill, and no opportunity for Texans to share testimony. That’s not how a democracy works — and trying to cheat Texans of their constitutional right to vote is the polar opposite of leadership.

Unfortunately, acting explicitly against the interests of Texans is a longstanding pattern for Republicans. For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we would like to highlight just a smattering of moments in recent memory when Republicans have voted to actively harm Texans:

  • Republicans voted no to COVID-19 relief. Every single Republican in Congress, including disgraced Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and every Texas Republican in the U.S. House, voted “no” to the American Rescue Plan — designed, as its name suggests, to rescue Americans from the grips of a pandemic. When you are voting against $1,400 checks for your constituents, vaccine distribution, and saving Texas lives, it begs the question — do you even want to help Texans?
  • Republicans voted to block a million Texans from getting health care. On House Budget Day last week, after briefly indicating that they would finally take the common-sense step of allowing more Texans to access Medicaid, Texas House Republicans remembered who they really are, and blocked almost a million Texans from getting affordable health care. This cruel decision flies in the face of decency, compassion, and public safety, particularly in the midst of a pandemic.
  • Republicans have spent the entire legislative session trying to strip Texans of their constitutional right to vote. Rep. Cain’s antics today are the latest in Republicans’ blatant attempt to plunge Texas back into Jim Crow. Their racist voter suppression bills SB 7 and HB 6 threaten to disenfranchise Texans of color, as well as voters with disabilities and working people. Democrats, advocates, businesses, and communities across Texas are fighting on all fronts to stop these racist bills from becoming law. However, Republicans have not bothered to hide how little they care about Texans’ opinions on the matter. After voting rights organization MOVE Texas provided a box of petitions signed by more than 10,000 Texans opposing these voter suppression bills, Texas Republicans literally put this box of testimony in the garbage:
  • Texas Democratic Party Voter Protection Director Rose Clouston issued the following statement:

“Right now, Republicans are trying to silence Texans, and they’re not even trying to hide it. Today, Briscoe Cain tried to shove voter suppression bill SB 7 through the House Elections Committee without even giving legislators the chance to read what’s in the bill. This is a brazen attempt to cheat Texans of their right to vote, to be represented, and to make their voices heard. It falls perfectly in line with Republicans’ pattern of going against Texans’ interests — from blocking people from getting health care, to voting against pandemic relief.

“If anyone still has questions about what Republicans stand for, they need look no further. The Texas GOP is laser-focused on stripping Texans of our rights — instead of helping us recover from the pandemic or taking action to prevent another energy crisis. The contrast with Democrats could not be clearer, as President Biden continues to make groundbreaking progress on behalf of American families. That’s what leadership looks like. Texas Democrats will keep fighting to defeat Republicans’ racist bills, protect people’s rights, and put Texans first.”
