During a powerful speech in Atlanta today, President Biden and Vice President Harris forcefully advocated for protecting the right to vote, ensuring free, fair, and secure elections, and changing the Senate rules to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
In response, Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement:
“Today, President Biden and Vice President Harris doubled down on their unshakeable commitment to defending Americans’ right to vote and ensuring that every election is free, fair, and secure. As President Biden said, the battle for the soul of America is a fight we will win, and we are proud to stand with him as he continues to fight for Americans’ fundamental right to vote in the face of Republican obstructionism. Here in Texas, we know firsthand the stakes of this fight as we’ve seen Texas Republican lawmakers shamelessly pass restrictive voting legislation designed to silence the voices of millions of Texans living in predominantly Hispanic and Black Communities.
“The U.S. House of Representatives has taken decisive action to protect our democracy, and we are grateful to our Texas lawmakers, both in the U.S. House and the Texas Legislature, who have fought tirelessly for our sacred freedom to vote. Now, it’s time for the U.S. Senate to follow suit and take immediate action.
“Texas Democrats have spoken with one voice from the start: we will do whatever it takes to protect the freedom to vote. And today we call on every member of the U.S. Senate to join President Biden and Vice President Harris in this commitment and pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect our elections and secure the right to vote for all Americans.
“States that are run by Republican-dominated legislatures are already dealing with the impact and consequences of voter suppression laws and we cannot afford to waste another day waiting – there must be definitive action taken now. Texas Republicans have already proven that they will stop at nothing to remain in power. With Texas’ first major election under the Republicans’ new anti-democratic legislation, 0ur democracy as we know it is at risk of becoming a relic of the past. Enacting federal legislation with voter protections is our only way to defeat voter suppression and preserve democracy. The Senate must act now and pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
