Despite Wider Availability, Vaccine Access Still Unequal for Black and Latino Communities Because of Texas Republicans’ Poor Vaccine Rollout
AUSTIN, Texas — Thanks to President Biden’s aggressive expansion of vaccine access, all Texans ages 16 and up are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday.
With more people eligible for the vaccine, Texans are able to look forward to safer communities, less fear and anxiety about whether they or their loved ones will get sick, and a clearer path towards recovery and the beginning of a sense of normalcy from pandemic. The massive expansion of vaccine eligibility is thanks to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which has not only put relief money in the pockets of over 100 million Americans, but also includes billions of dollars of funding to boost vaccine distribution across the country.
Every Republican in Congress voted against this crucial relief and vaccine funding, including all Texas Republican members of the U.S. House and disgraced Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. Meanwhile, despite broader vaccine availability, Black and Latino communities are still vastly underrepresented in vaccine access because of Texas Republicans’ mismanaged vaccine rollout, and Governor Abbott’s refusal to prioritize racial justice in vaccine distribution.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Thanks to President Biden’s aggressive vaccine expansion, Texans woke up this morning with greater hopes of getting vaccinated and finally moving forward past this pandemic. This is fantastic, emotional news for the many Texas families who have worried all year about getting sick or losing a loved one because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“More Texans are eligible for the vaccine today because Democrats fought tooth and nail to pass the American Rescue Plan and expand vaccine funding, distribution, and access. However, every single Texas Republican in Congress voted against this funding, against greater vaccine availability, and against protecting the lives and livelihoods of Texans. It could not be clearer who the real leaders are, and when we finally beat back this pandemic, it will be because Democrats pushed past every obstacle to keep all Americans safe and healthy.”
