When it Comes to Wearing Facemasks, From Trump to Gohmert, Republicans Refuse to Listen to Scientists or Doctors
Austin, TX — Today, two more Texas Trump Republicans, Congressman Louie Gohmert and Trump-Endorsed candidate Wesley Hunt contracted the coronavirus disease, continuing the trend of Republicans not taking the coronavirus seriously and putting Texans in danger in the process.
Donald Trump has long been an opponent of wearing masks, arriving in Midland without a facemask and retweeting a discredited Republican doctor who said that masks do not help stop the spread of the disease.
Greg Abbott waited until the last possible minute to implement a statewide mask mandate and his mandate only came after thousands of Texans had died and he refused to allow local governments to implement a similar mandate of their own.
Now, Congressman Louie Gohmert, the most anti-science member of Congress, refused to wear a mask after he was diagnosed with coronavirus, putting his entire Congressional staff and countless others at jeopardy.
These are our Republican leaders. Republicans have made common-sense science a partisan issue.
Texas Democratic Party Communications Director Abhi Rahman issued the following statement:
“Texas Republicans continue to refuse to listen to science or experts and do the common-sense thing to keep Texas families safe. Wearing masks shouldn’t be political — it’s basic science. As Texas passes the grim 6,000 death mark, Republicans like Louie Gohmert and Wesley Hunt contracting COVID-19 is the least surprising news we’ve heard since the crisis started.
“From day one, Republicans like Donald Trump, Greg Abbott, and Louie Gohmert have downplayed and mismanaged this crisis, with deadly consequences in Texas and across the country. Thank goodness Louie Gohmert has the best government-run health care money can buy as he fights this virus. Too bad his party doesn’t want the same for the 400,000+ other Texans who have been diagnosed with COVID-19.”
