Donald Trump has been impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Updated 5:55 p.m. CST

Donald Trump has been impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives. The brave men and women who honored their oath of office today by voting for the impeachment of Donald Trump understand the threat his corrupt actions have on our country. Now the responsibility of holding the executive branch accountable falls on the U.S. Senate. Although Senate Republicans will likely choose Donald Trump over the American democracy, history will remember their cowardly inaction accordingly.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, accusing him of abusing the power of the presidency and obstructing Congress. Throughout the impeachment inquiries, in the House Intelligence and House Judiciary Committees, the American people heard testimony from brave public servants and constitutional scholars. All the men and women who appeared before our elected officials substantiated the claim that Trump abused the power of the presidency in his attempt to solicit foreign interference in the 2020 election.

The corrupt effort involved Trump using millions of dollars in military aid and a coveted White House visit as bargaining chips to coerce Ukraine into providing political favors. White House officials knew at the time how disturbing Trump’s abuse of power was and immediately worked to cover it up. Trump’s inner circle intervened to “lockdown” all records of the phone call — part of a larger pattern of the Trump administration abusing the systems used to store classified information to protect politically sensitive issues.

Republicans will continue to circulate lies and misinformation because it appears as though losing an election takes precedence over their commitment to our democracy. Donald Trump has made countless promises to the American people, but he’s proven that he’s only capable of serving himself — and that there is no line he won’t cross to do so.

Today is an important day in the history of our nation. It’s the day, our brave Members of Congress, bolstered by their values and the grassroots, stand up to the constitution to defend our democracy.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives

Our American democracy is threatened by Trump’s presidency, including our honest elections, free press, the rule of law, and our inalienable rights. Republicans herald the American democracy yet relentlessly attack the very institutions that allow democracies to exist. The president of the United States undermines American foreign policy by employing corrupt tactics against our allies, and most recently, validated the founders’ fears by attempting to coerce a foreign power into intervening in our elections. Allowing the president of the United States to pick and choose which norms and laws he wishes to abide by, without fear of repercussions, will undoubtedly set a very dangerous precedent in our country. “If we allow a president to be above the law, we do so surely at the peril of our republic,” Speaker Pelosi said during her address to House leaders, quoting founder George Mason.

No one is above the law, not even the president. Republicans who attempt to justify Trump’s betrayal of our national security are committing a grave disservice to the American people. We support Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats as they vote on articles of impeachment against a president who has flagrantly jeopardized the integrity of our elections and our democracy.
