AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement in response to former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chavin being sentenced to 22-and-a-half years in federal prison for the murder of George Floyd:
“George Floyd should still be alive today. His family, and far too many other Black American families, continue to grieve the senseless loss of loved ones at the hands of police brutality. For far too long, our country has not lived up to its promise of treating every person with the same dignity, respect, and protection.
“Today, and every single day, Black Lives Matter. Activists in the Movement for Black Lives are fighting tirelessly for an end to the scourge of police brutality that has taken the lives of too many Black Americans. Thanks to their work, we know we are moving closer to a just future. Today, we remember George Floyd and hold his family in our hearts, with hope that change is on the horizon.”
