Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“One year ago today, the previously unthinkable and unimaginable took place right before our very eyes. To forceibly remove children from their parents wasn’t just cruel, it was downright sickening, and represented a twisted form of child abuse.
“Last year, Texans of all stripes rose together and spoke in one united voice to end this terrible, inhumane policy. Together we showed the best of our American spirit, while Trump and his Republican allies continued to show us the worst.
“It is sick that Trump Republicans ever thought traumatizing immigrant families was acceptable border policy. Instead of realizing the error of his ways and working to reunite families and end detentions as quickly as possible, the Trump Administration has spent this last year shooting tear gas at children, locking them in cages, making them sleep on rocks, and are now holding them at a base that served as a World War II internment camp.
“The work here is not close to being over. We must stay vigilant and ensure that every kid is reunited with their parents and that we are fostering acceptable, humane border policies. Every child deserves to have basic human rights, regardless of documentation status.”
