Former State Representative, first openly gay Texas legislator, and Texas Democratic Party Legislative Director Glen Maxey issued the following statement:
“As we reflect on Pride Month, we are thankful for the hard work of generations of LGBTQ advocates and activists who fought to make America a more equal place. We remember those we lost along the way.
“The fight for dignity and equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people is not over. From bathrooms to bullying to the ballot box, LGBTQ Americans still face hurdles across our society. Everybody deserves to build a family, work, and live free from discrimination.
“This Pride, we are also thrilled to celebrate this historic legislative session and the founding of the first LGBTQ Caucus in the Texas House. Texas is a better place because of Mary González, Celia Israel, Julie Johnson, Jessica González, and Erin Zwiener fighting to protect the rights of all Texans.
“Texas Democrats are proud to champion legislation to end hate crimes, fight for non-discrimination ordinances, and advance LGBTQ rights because all of us are created equal.
“We’ve come so far, but we still have work to do. We know the march for equality continues.”
