AUSTIN, Texas — Last week, the Texas Democratic Party joined Powered by People and Beto O’Rourke for the “Texas Drive for Democracy” to discuss how voter suppression bills like state Senate Bill 7 would hurt Texans ability to participate in democracy, and the importance of new legislation that protects voting rights in Texas and across the country.
The Texas Democratic Party also unveiled an ambitious voter registration plan, aptly named Project Texas, last week, in which the party hopes to contact 2 million unregistered, likely Democratic voters across the state. The majority of unregistered Texas voters are extremely diverse, just like Texas’ fast-growing and young population.
The last stop of the Texas Drive for Democracy will be this Sunday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the south steps of the state Capitol. The public and Democratic leaders alike will join together for the For the People Rally to demand our right to vote remains protected as a cornerstone of our democracy.
“Texans need to know that Republican state representatives are working to make it harder to vote in advance of upcoming elections,” said Luke Warford, Chief Strategy Officer at the Texas Democratic Party. “Republicans know the only way they can win is if they make it harder for Texans to go out and vote. It’s critical that Texans understand the gravity of this moment and know that they have the power to make Texas a more equitable place to live, work, and raise a family. That’s why we need to register voters everywhere. Not just in major cities like Dallas and Houston, but Midland, and Lubbock, and Abilene as well. We’ve joined the Texas Drive for Democracy to tell Democrats in these communities that we can’t win without your help!”

This stage of the tour will culminate on Sunday, June 20 in Austin as Democrats across the state participate in the “For the People Rally” at the state Capitol. Partnering with state and national voting rights groups and leaders, event attendees will rally for the federal government to pass the For the People Act, a newly-proposed federal voting rights bill that would further protect the right to vote across the country while increasing voter access and limiting partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression efforts.
“We ask that everyone join Texas Democrats, Beto O’Rourke, state and national leaders, and everyday Texans at the For the People Rally this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on the south steps of the state Capitol as we reclaim our right to participate in our Democracy, our right to vote and our right to shape the future of our great state,” Warford added.
