Austin, TX — The enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was a historic moment for inclusion in our nation. The ADA protects the civil rights of people with disabilities by requiring that public spaces meet accessibility standards and that workplaces make accommodations to be inclusive environments.
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Today we celebrate nearly three decades of the Americans with Disabilities Act. No one should ever face discrimination due to their disability status. While we have made great strides, the fight for full accessibility is not over.
“Too often today, our progress is under threat. President Trump has openly mocked people with disabilities. Republicans in Congress have relentlessly threatened to slash Medicaid and the lifesaving programs it funds. And Texas Republicans have fought to remove protections for people with preexisting conditions time and time again.
“Texas Democrats understand that the fight for accessibility includes expanding healthcare, equality in employment, access to public spaces, transportation and accommodations. We will continue to fight for accessibility for all Texans because no one should ever face discrimination due to their disability status.
“Today, and every day, we must fight to uphold our commitment to protecting Texans with disabilities and fight for a more inclusive and equal society. Our work endures and it continues.”
