Austin, TX — Last week, young people across Texas walked out in protest as part of a nationwide effort by United We Dream and others to demand Congress pass a Clean DREAM Act by December. If a Clean DREAM Act is not passed by December, DACA recipients risk deportation and families will be torn apart.
Real lives are at stake:
- “I was once an undocumented immigrant and I know the fear that we go through that our parents are going to be taken away, that I would be taken away,” said Mayra Ibarra. [Spectrum News, November 9]
- “…If we do not pass a Dream Act, people’s DACAs will begin to expire and people will be at risk of deportation. Which is why we need all of you to put pressure on our elected officials,” said student Roberto Valadez [Texas Standard, November 10]
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“Texas is stronger because of more than one hundred thousand DACA recipients and the entire immigrant community. Their lives should not be used as bargaining chips. Texas families are in peril and they cannot wait any longer. It’s time for a clean DREAM Act.
“The Texas Democratic Party calls on Republican Congressmen Will Hurd, John Culberson, Pete Sessions, and Lamar Smith to do the right thing and support a Clean DREAM Act now.”
Texas Democrats are encouraging everyone to take action by participating in the DREAM Act National Call-In Day and ask your Congressman to support a Clean DREAM Act now. Call 1-888-778-6856 and enter your zip code to be connected with your elected official or visit weareheretostay.org.
- The DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act) is a bill in Congress that if passed, would provide a pathway to citizenship to DACA recipients and grant legal status to certain undocumented immigrants, including Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients.
- A Clean DREAM Act does NOT call for additional resources for the militarization of the border and Trump’s mass deportation force.
