AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democrats are calling for the immediate resignation of Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) after Roy advocated protecting hateful and racist speech and invoked lynching as a means to “round up the bad guys.”
“There’s old sayings in Texas about ‘find all the rope in Texas and get a tall oak tree.’ We take justice very seriously, and we ought to do that — round up the bad guys.” — Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy
The comments came amidst a slew of racist rhetoric from Roy, including attacks on Asian-Americans, undocumented people, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Roy also stated, “My concern about this hearing is that it seems to want to venture into the policing of rhetoric in a free society.”
In light of these comments, Texas Democrats call on Congressman Roy to resign immediately. Roy’s glorification of lynching is a direct attack on Black Americans. Further, Roy made these comments during a hearing on anti-Asian hate and violence — which has been on the rise for the last year, fueled by racist rhetoric from Roy’s own party.
No elected official in America should be able to glorify lynching — one of the darkest stains on our country — and remain in office. Roy’s actions are putting Texans in danger. He is unfit to represent Texans.
Texas Democratic Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“It is an outrage, and terrifying, to hear a Congressman claiming any connection between lynchings and justice. Chip Roy is a danger to Americans and Texas Democrats are calling for his immediate resignation. Roy’s invoking of lynching is part and parcel of the campaign of terror Republicans have been waging on communities of color for years. Chip Roy is using his platform as a Congressman to glorify one of the darkest parts of American history, and fueling the white supremacist violence that continues to grip our country. Roy’s words are a white supremacist dog whistle you can spot from a mile away.
“Roy’s comments are painful and offensive to a country reeling from the horrifying anti-Asian attacks in Atlanta this week. Roy is perpetuating the racist systems that harm us and contributing to the terror people of color face every day in our country. We cannot allow him to remain in office a single day longer.”
