Texas Democratic Party and Nexstar Announce Official Democratic Debate for U.S. Senate Primary Runoff During Texas Democratic Convention

Austin, TX — Today, the Texas Democratic Party and Nexstar announced the official Democratic United States Senate Debate during the Texas Democratic Convention. The debate will be held Saturday, June 6 at 6:00 PM on Nexstar stations across the state of Texas and will be streamed online. The debate will be moderated by KXAN-TV’s anchor team of Robert Hadlock and Sally Hernandez, and Dallas Morning News political writer, Gromer Jeffers, Jr.

Join our Democratic candidates MJ Hegar and Royce West as they speak to the voters of Texas and vie for the right to take down vulnerable Republican Senator John Cornyn.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

“Texas is the biggest battleground state in the country. To take back our state, Democrats must get our vision for the future to as many Texans as possible and showcase our candidates on as many platforms as possible. That’s why the Texas Democratic Party couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Nexstar to deliver a U.S. Senate debate for Texans everywhere.

“There is no Texas race bigger than the U.S. Senate race. MJ Hegar and Royce West represent the best of what Texas has to offer. This debate presents an opportunity for them to discuss our ideas and solutions to the challenges Texans face every single day. It will also put our nominee in the strongest possible position to defeat John Cornyn and elect Democrats up and down the ballot.”

United States Senate Democratic Candidate MJ Hegar issued the following statement:

“With people across Texas continuing to adapt to the new reality that the COVID-19 pandemic has created, I appreciate the Texas Democratic Party and Nexstar providing voters the opportunity to hear how we can deliver Washington a healthy dose of Texas values. Texans are sick and tired of being sold out by Senator John Cornyn, and are ready to send a decorated combat veteran and working mom who understands the challenges they are facing to DC to fight for them. I look forward to sharing my plans to ensure every Texan has accessible and affordable health care, economic opportunity, and a government that works for people, not special interests.”

United States Senate Democratic Candidate State Senator Royce West issued the following statement:

“I’m excited to participate in the June 2 Texas Democratic Party/Nexstar Senate Primary Runoff Debate. I look forward to working to turn Texas blue this fall, and defeating John Cornyn. Republicans have failed Texas at the state and national level, and it is time for true Democratic leadership in Washington and at all levels of state government.

“Texas faces difficult times ahead as we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. The July 14 runoff is a vitally important election, and we must continue as a party and as individuals to fight for expanded vote by mail programs. The fact that our state’s attorney general does not want Texans to be able to vote by mail even amid a global pandemic is a prime example of failed Republican leadership, and it is long past time for Texas to turn blue.”

The exclusive live broadcast will air from 7 p.m. CT to 8 p.m. CT on participating Nexstar stations. The broadcast and livestream will also be carried by KSAT-TV (ABC) in San Antonio. Local viewers may access the livestream of the debate online by visiting their local Nexstar station’s website or the Texas Democratic Party’s Facebook.
