Republicans Block Freedom To Vote Act, Cement Status As Biggest Obstacle To Democracy In America

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Democratic Party Co-Executive Director Jamarr Brown issued the following statement on Senate Republicans’ blockage of opening debate on the Freedom to Vote Act:

“Today, by voting to block the Freedom to Vote Act from moving forward to debate, Senate Republicans confirmed what they’ve shown us for months: the Republican Party is the greatest threat to American democracy today. I’m disgusted, but unsurprised, that both Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz were among those who voted to stop this critical voting rights legislation from going forward. As we’ve seen all year and saw again today, Texas Republicans are perfectly happy to sacrifice our democracy, and silence voters, in order to keep themselves in power. All of us — and in particular voters of color — are paying the price for their self-serving political agenda.

“Texas Democrats fought incredibly hard to get federal voting rights legislation as far as we did today. This summer, Texas Democrats’ 37-day walkout brought the struggle for voting rights to the forefront of the national consciousness, and put Texas voters’ plight in the national spotlight. Our lawmakers rallied a massive coalition for voting rights, including national and statewide advocates, labor unions, President Biden and Vice President Harris, and key state and federal legislators — including many of the Senators who co-sponsored the Freedom to Vote Act. And in the face of yet another Republican obstacle, we will not back down. Texas Democrats will continue to champion voting rights, and we will not stop fighting until every American voter can freely and fully exercise this most basic constitutional right.

“Every day we wait is another chance for Republicans in Texas and across the country to pass laws limiting our right to vote and shutting down the voices of Black and Brown Americans. Voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. Today, Republican Senators told us that they do not believe in this most basic tenet of our democracy. I urge Americans across the country to come together to vote out every one of these politicians who works against our democracy — and I urge our federal Democratic legislators to do what must be done, and end the Senate filibuster so we can get this critical legislation passed. Our democracy, and our future, is at stake.”
