Austin, TX — Today, ahead of Vice President Mike Pence’s Dallas visit, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Texas House Democratic Leader Chris Turner, and State Representative Rhetta Bowers hosted a zoom press conference expanding on Trump, Pence, and Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s utter failures while managing the coronavirus crisis in Texas.
Texas has seen more than 10,000 new cases the past two days and has had 13 days in a row with record breaking hospitalizations. Despite the dire trend in Texas, yesterday, it was announced that the Trump Administration decided to end funding for seven crucial testing sites in Texas on July 1st.
In every step of the way, Trump, Pence, and Abbott have utterly failed Texans and put our health in jeopardy.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins issued the following statement:
“A record number of new cases were reported yesterday, but Trump claims the virus is ‘going away.’ Trump needs to visit Texas. We have surpassed 120,000 deaths and 2.3 million infected, but Trump is tweeting threats and stoking division.
“The crisis is worse because of the inaction and the infighting by President Trump.”
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson issued the following statement:
“The Vice President is coming to the epicenter of what we’re dealing with. We can show him in the same district he’s visiting the food deserts, the distances we have to travel to get healthcare, the stress minorities have to deal with because of racism and unfairness.
“We want him to make his trip meaningful so he can see the face of this virus. And why it’s going up and not going down. We can show him why our small businesses suffer.”
Texas House Democratic Leader Chris Turner issued the following statement:
“Governor Abbott has repeatedly bowed to political pressure. Follow the Trump playbook at every turn with the confusing, haphazard and disorganized response to this pandemic.
“Abbott’s failed leadership has cost lives and has led to Texas becoming one of the most dangerous states to live in during this pandemic.”
State Representative Rhetta Bowers issued the following statement:
“Trump is putting American lives and livelihoods at risk to further his political interests. Trump claimed the virus is ‘going away’ despite increases in infections and hospitalizations.
“He is failing communities of color, whose lives and livelihoods are disproportionately at risk. Black and Latino Americans are dying at far higher rates than white Americans.
