Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:
“The status quo is deadly. Governor Abbott and the Republican establishment are refusing to pass laws today that would stop shootings and hate crimes tomorrow.
“The Republican Governor continues to do nothing. He delays action because of his billionaire donors and the gun lobby. We all know that Texans already agree on what to do, and every day that goes by, our families are in harm’s way. We have already have ‘consensus.’
“Even before these tragic mass shootings, 78% of Texas voters demanded action on comprehensive universal background checks, 72% of Texas voters support passing red flag laws so that we keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, and a majority of Texas voters wants to keep weapons of war off our streets.
“Texans agree that enough is enough. The only people obstructing action that keeps us safe are Governor Abbott, the Republican establishment, and the destructive gun lobby.
“Texas Democrats know gun violence and hate have reached epidemic proportions in our state and in our country. The rise of white supremacy and Texas’ reckless gun laws have put us all in danger.
“We need change now. That’s why Texas Democrats are calling for an emergency special session to end gun violence and combat hate crimes.
“Every Texan should be free to walk outside, go to church, go to school, and go shopping without the fear of gun violence. Talk is not enough — to make a safer Texas, we need laws and immediate action.”
